Ontario Biodiversity Afforestation Project (OBAP)

Planting to Store Carbon and Protect Biodiversity

FCA plants trees and enhances forests to store carbon and create biodiverse habitats. This involves renewing Boreal or Great Lake St Lawrence Forest conditions on inactive farmland in order to restore biodiversity and generate carbon credits, or improving forest management on forested areas.

If you are the owner of inactive land, you may be eligible to participate and have trees planted at no or little cost to you. If you are looking for carbon offsets from forests in Ontario, we can help. Please contact us.

The video below highlights our Ontario Bidiversity Afforestation Project which generated 77,000 tonnes of carbon offsets which were sold on the voluntary market.

Ontario Biodiversity Afforestation Project

Forest Carbon Alliance Inc. (FCA) is interested in speaking to you about land that is suitable to plant trees for the purpose of storing carbon. This involves renewing Boreal or Great Lake St Lawrence Forest conditions on abandoned farmland in order to restore biodiversity and generate carbon credits.

Where is the Project Located?

The project takes place within the Ontario Highway 11 corridor. It spans a large geographical area, which is most easily described by starting slightly south of North Bay to ending slightly north of Cochrane. The project requires several willing landowners to participate.

How does it work?

We will consult with you to examine the eligibility of your property and then develop a plan that suits your objectives, timelines and values. You will receive a customized map of your property showing where your forest could be planted.

We will estimate how much carbon can be stored within the trees of your forest based on the soil conditions and species.

You will receive the forest as long as you agree to keepthe forest for 100 years and provide us ownership of the carbon credits created during that time.

What will be planted and how?

FCA will always plant the ecologically appropriate tree species given the conditions on your land, however it is the intention of FCA to promote the growth of a more diverse and aesthetically pleasing forest composed of:

Red pine, Black Spruce, and White Spruce. White pine may be feasible if conditions allow.

The site preparation work usually begins in the spring/summer once the site is prepared, we will plant the trees. We will follow-up the year after planting, and as needed until the trees are established.

How do I participate?

If you are interested in moving forward, we will enter in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with you. A copy of the MOU is provided at the back of this information package. This is not a commitment to the project, but it will allow us to do the additional assessment necessary to complete the eligibility in OBAP.

After sorting out all the details specific to your property, we provide you with the Carbon Transfer Agreement (CTA) and financial means to obtain independent legal advice.

After signing the CTA, we will officially set aside the amount of seedlings required to plant your property and perform all the necessary work required to establish the forest on your property.

We will prepare the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) forms for you so you can apply for the property tax credit offered through the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

What is a carbon credit?

A carbon credit is the result of a process that, if documented correctly, results in the measurable decrease of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere (in this case CO2). After an independent, third party, with the authority to audit this type of documentation and process, conducts their review; they can then issue a statement confirming the amount of carbon credits. That statement is what is referred to as a “carbon credit”. In the case of the OBAP the process is the growth of trees on fallow land. The documentation required is the registration of the trees on title and any planning FCA did in order to grow the trees.

When does the project start?

Once the landowner has completed the legal agreement with FCA, trees are purchased, any site preparation is usually completed in the spring or later summer and trees will be planted within a year of signing the contract.

What's in it for the landowner?

The landowner receives a service valued at $1000 per acre in costs associated with preparing the soil, managing the competition from other species, planting, and caring for your new forest.

The landowners own the trees. In addition, we will sit down with the landowner to plan this new forest, which will include such items as species of trees planted, development of a network of trails for recreational activities throughout your new forest and other items specific to your property.

The landowner will be assisted in receiving up to 75% tax credit on their residential property taxes from the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program offered by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resource.

What is the cost to the landowner?

There is NO cost to the landowner. FCA will purchase the trees, plants the trees and complete any site preparation, if required, to establish the trees.

Is this a government-funded project?

No. This project is entirely funded by FCA, which is a private entity.

What's in it for the FCA?

FCA would retain the rights to the carbon and environmental credits that would be generated from the establishment of the new forest, by agreeing not to cut the trees for the full growth cycle, which is 100 years. To ensure the project is viable, an agreement between FCA and you will be put on title.

What's the catch?

There is no catch. FCA is motivated by creating ownership of the carbon credits, you, the landowner, receives compensation through the establishment of the forest on your land, which you own. This results in an increase in the value, reduction in ownership cost due to the tax incentivesand increases personal enjoyment of the land. Both parties stand to gain from this project.

Why do I have to register the agreement on title?

Part of the documentation that must be provided to create a carbon credit is proof that the trees will store the carbon for a long time. Placing the agreement on title is the only way to ensure a future landowner does not remove the forest before they reach their life cycle.

Have you done any projects like this anywhere else?

FCA is comprised of professional foresters that have managed over 50,000 square kilometers of Crown Forests in Ontario and have overseen the planting of over 25 million trees in the last three years.

Can I view the project development documentation?

Yes! Please see the project documents on the OBAP page.
